Online advertising is different from all other advertising avenues because it is instant and because it provide a wide range of targeting opportunities. But perhaps the most interesting about online advertising is the possibility to track the result instantly.

Below we outline the 10 most important areas when you want to get the best from our services or any other pop service for that matter.

If you use these tips as your checklist before you buy a campaign then you are well on your way to get great results in your marketing campaign.

In the following we use ad or advert when we refer to your website, web page or campaign page.

One of the most important areas when using pop advertising is the ad design. Most people think it is about sending visitors to your website or home page. But countless testing has shown that it is a matter of getting the attention before you present your website to the visitor.

Therefore forget about sending visitors to your home page. You need to make a special ad. This can be an HTML page on your website dedicated for pop advertising.

You already know that many people dislike pops and even then they remain one of the most successful advertising avenues. Most webmasters also find the income revenue interesting so they continue to sell "pop advertising space" on their website.

With this in mind then you now need to catch the attention of the surfer before he or she close the pop window. In fact you probably don't have more than one second to grasp the attention or it will be "good-bye" ad with a quick click.

To make sure this does not happen then you need to make a BOLD, COLORFUL, SHORT-TEXT and TO-THE-POINT ad that will get the full attention instantly.

So when you use pop advertising then you will always be more successful with a bold, colorful and great looking ad than a dim colorless ad.

Design is King and can improve results with up to 500% percent when you choose the right design.

Now we know we only have 1-second to grasp the attention of the surfer. So a 600-word long text page in 10point fonts will most likely not be the best tactics when we want to get the attention quickly.

So in other words the text need to be short and bold.

If you sell "Blue Widgets" then you might think that such a heading will be a good approach. But this is not the case. Ask yourself who is the most interesting person you know. We bet you will think about yourself. And you are right - you are the most interesting person. And guess what - everybody else are just like you. They all feel that they are the most interesting person in this world.

So you want to address the first question the surfer will have even without he or she knows about it. And that is "What's in it for me?" This is the question you must answer within 1-second or you will lose most of potential readers and therefore buyers, subscribers and eventually customers.

But if you "hit the nail" then you will succeed to divert the surfer and get his or her full attention. Now they know that you have something they need or have a great interest in.

If you make your ad so the visitor must click to get more information then you have just set up a great control point. Measuring the "click through rate" or CTR will tell you how effective your ad is.

The content of your ad need to be in line with the audience you target. For instance if you sell Hotdog’s at the “Super Bowl” event then you might not get any results from advertising on the Internet.

On the other hand if you have a product or service that can be sold to almost any person in the US then you can use pop advertising with success and get in contact with many potential buyers.

Real Estate is a great example. Thousands if not millions look at real estate on the internet and pop advertising provide a great way to get in contact with new potential buyers.

Downloadable information or programs is a similar great area where you can track results easily. And the list goes on and on.

Like death and taxes, there is no escaping color. Colors should be an important consideration when you design your advert.

Colors often have different meanings in various cultures. But today in the U.S., researchers have found the following to be accurate.

Black is the color of authority and power. It is popular in fashion because it makes people appear thinner. It is also stylish and timeless.

White. Brides wear white to symbolize innocence and purity. White reflects light and is considered a summer color. White is popular in decorating and in fashion because it is light, neutral, and goes with everything.

Red. The most emotionally intense color, red stimulates a faster heartbeat and breathing. It is also the color of love. Red clothing gets noticed and makes the wearer appear heavier. Since it is an extreme color, red clothing might not help people in negotiations or confrontations. Red cars are popular targets for thieves.

The most romantic color, pink, is more tranquilizing. Sports teams sometimes paint the locker rooms used by opposing teams bright pink so their opponents will lose energy.

Blue. The color of the sky and the ocean, blue is one of the most popular colors. It causes the opposite reaction as red. Peaceful, tranquil blue causes the body to produce calming chemicals, so it is often used in bedrooms. Blue can also be cold and depressing.

Fashion consultants recommend wearing blue to job interviews because it symbolizes loyalty. People are more productive in blue rooms. Studies show weightlifters are able to handle heavier weights in blue gyms.

Make sure the color of your choice match the content, design and overall purpose of your campaign. We have seen that color changes alone can affect campaign results with above 100%.

And remember it's better to stay with the "web safe colors". This is the 256 standard colors and they go a long way and display perfectly on almost any computer screen out there.

When you design your new ad then be sure that it will display correctly in a 800x600 pixel window.

Many computers still use a screen resolution of 800x600 and you don't want to lose these visitors by using a bigger resolution like the 1024x768. Remember a 800x600 advert will display just fine on any computer screen with higher resolution.

So 800x600 should be your choice if you want to target 99% of the computer screens out there. The one percent that still use a lower resolution such as 640x480 (very old computers) are perhaps not the big spenders anyway.

Download time is the most ignored area we see in online advertising. Advertisers think that everybody and their mother have the best and fastest Internet connection.

But this is not the case. A great part of the US population use dial-up modems. And if you have tried dial-up modem yourself then you might have seen that they often resolve on 33,600 bps.

If your ad (web page) is 100Kb then it will take 26 seconds to load your ad with a 33,600 bps modem and your ad window will be closed before anybody see your ad. 26-second is almost a lifetime on the Internet.

Latest stats (2004) show that only 35% of the US households connect by a broadband connection. So in other words if your ad is too big you might easily lose 65% of the visitors.

The recommended maximum size for an effective pop ad is below 20Kb. It will "only" take 5 seconds to load on a "slow" 33,600 bps modem.

Another great area where advertisers make big mistakes are when they forget to check the limits they have with their own host.

When you buy i.e. 100,000 visitors to your page and your ad size is let's say 100kb then you need a bandwidth of 9.54 Gb. If you are on a low price shared hosting account with let's say a 5 Gb monthly allowance then your host will put your site off-line after 52,500 visitors (without counting any other traffic to your site).

Another area is to make sure that your hosting provider offer burst able bandwidth. This will practically allow you to use 5 Gb in one day and nothing for the rest of the month.

Some hosting providers will divide the monthly traffic with 30 days and 24 hours thus allowing you to transfer only about 140 pages per hour or in other cases 3,333 pages per 24-hour.

When we supply a 100,000 visitor campaign then we might send up to about 2% per hour on certain days/ hours. That’s 2,000-page load per hour.

So check specifics with your provider and make sure you have the right type as well as enough bandwidth. And remember one visitor means that your ad page will be requested one time. Surfers that stay on your site might request many more pages. You will have to add that to the equation.

It's important to decide if you are better of with category targeted traffic compared general traffic (known as RON - Ron Of Network).

General traffic consists of traffic from all categories and can sometime produce better results than targeted categories. Only a test can tell precisely what type is best for your ad campaign.

If you are selling gizmo's for cars and per default select the automotive category then you might lose all those potential buyers who are actively searching for great gizmo's for cars looking on sites in the Gifts category.

To get a great result from any advertising campaign you need to choose the right ad design, color, content, message, ad size or category. Also you need to know if pops, banners or search engines are the right choice.

Serious advertising usually consists of all avenues but these avenues have their own characteristic.

Pops shown as full page pop-unders on serious web-sites that maximize the number of pops a user can receive usually receive a 1% click through rate (CTR). That is if the ad page is optimized as described above. If not optimized don't expect more than 0.1% CTR.

Banners (the best) receive about 0.5% and can be a great advertising avenue. Unfortunately only few have figured out how to make great banners and overall CTR from the networks we have access to produce 0.1% CTR or 1 click out of 1,000 impressions.

Search engines are great and it should be on the list for advertising. You can either pay for inclusions like Google Adwords or Yahoo's Overture inclusion or you can start to optimize your website and hope the different search engines will list your site.

The most effective and controllable form for advertising remains pop advertising. While you can buy yourself a great position on a search engine you cannot control people who search.

If you have a new product no body knows about then you will not get any clicks from any search engine. Only pop advertising can give you almost unlimited exposure in hours.

We have not touched e-mail marketing as it remain we think an area with great risk for having your website shut down if you are accused for spamming.

So what can you expect from pop-under advertising? If you follow the above and you have a product service with a general good demand then a 1% CTR would not be unusual.

But when you do your calculation then try to use 0.5% CTR instead then you have a good chance to be positively surprised.
If 500,000 targeted visitors cost $495.00 and you receive 0.5% CTR then you pay $0.19 per qualified visitor.

If you use Google Adwords then you are not going to get much traffic if you maximize your click cost to 19 cent. There is a good chance you can get a little bit here and there from several search engines but you would need to run several accounts and probably wait many months.

With our packages you get the whole lot with one account. And you can get the delivery as fast as in 14 days.

And best of all we provide great stats where you can follow the campaign in real time down to the hour. We even tell what browser and operating system the visitor have. Great when you decide if you want to optimize your ad for all browsers.

If your ad is made in "clean" HTML code then we even insert click tracking code "on the fly" so you can see how many clicks you receive on your ad.

PPC Search Engine
vs.
Pop Advertising

Search Engines are great sources for targeted visitors. A good ad running with Google Adwords can easily receive 1% click through.

If you also want visitors quickly then you must place your self on or near the top. Your cost per click will then quickly go above $1.00 some search phrases even above $25.00.

Pop advertising produce an average 0.5% click through. Some marketers have found ways to get above 1% click through with pop advertising and they further enjoy the possibility to get up to 100,000 visitors per day (impressions of the ad page).

If you receive 1% click through from a 1-million visitor campaign then you pay $0.195 per click or 19.5 cent. Now compare that to Google Adwords and you will see why pop advertising remains extremely successful. And that will continue here in 2004 despite that almost 15% of Internet surfers use pop-up blockers. The remaining 85% offer great business opportunities.
